Tokyopop has a number of new manga series set for release in the first quarter of 2008, including the shojo horror sequel New Pet Shop of Horrors and the shonen dark fantasy series Shin Megami Tensei.  Tokyopop has already published Matsuri Akino's popular 10-volume Pet Shop of Horrors manga which is set in Los Angeles' Chinatown, where the mysterious Count D runs a unique pet shop where the exotic pets come with a three-point contract.  Dire consequences ensue when customers do not live up to their contracts and the stand-alone stories typically chronicle the events resulting from these breaches of contract.

In 2005 Akino began a new on-going series, Shin Pet Shop of Horrors, which has now reached four volumes.  The stylish New Pet Shop of Horrors manga, set in Tokyo where Count D has set up a new shop, should have a built-in audience that remembers the original 10-volume manga, which inspired a four-volume OAV produced by Madhouse that Urban Vision released in the U.S. in 2000.

Also in February Tokypop is releasing Kazuaki Yanagisawa's Shin Megami Tensei, a nine-volume shonen series based on a videgoame RPG by Atlus released for a number of platforms in the 90s.  The action-packed fantasy manga in which the teenage protagonist has to fend off demons summoned by the U.S. ambassador is rated 18+, which should provide evidence of how dark this demon-filled saga really is.  The Shin Megami Tensei manga also inspired an anime OAV, Tokyo Revelation, which has been released in the U.S. by Manga Entertainment.
