Ultimatum is reporting (via Anime News Network) that a second season of the Dinosaur King anime series will debut in Japan in February.  Produced by anime powerhouse Sunrise, the Dinosaur King anime (Kodai Oja Kyoryu King D-Kids Adventure) is based on a card/video game hybrid created in Japan by Sega that uses the same mechanics as the Mushiking game, but substitutes dinosaurs for beetles (see 'Sega Plans Game-Based Anime Movies' for the skinny on the games).

The first episode of the Dinosaur King anime debuted in Japan on February 4th, 2007, and barely seven months later 4Kids aired its adaptation of the series on its Saturday morning animation block here in the States in September.

The Dinosaur King anime has been doing quite well here.  4Kids' CEO Al Kahn singled it out as an exceptional performer even as he was lamenting the state of the anime industry in Japan at the ICv2 Conference on Anime and Manga (see 'Sparks Fly at ICv2 Anime/Manga Conference').  Kahn noted that the Dinosaur King anime was garnering good ratings and that he had made a deal for the Dinosaur King card game (though he provided no details).  Nintendo plans to release a version of the Dinosaur King game for its DS handheld console platform in 2008.
