Slave Labor Graphics has announced the publication of Bombaby, a four-issue miniseries by Anthony Mazzotta.  It details the travails of an ordinary middle class Indian girl with very traditional parents, who suddenly discovers that she is the reincarnation of India's ancient protector, the Goddess of Mumbai.  Mazzotta's art captures the aesthetic, as well as exuberance, spectacle and panache of 1960s Bollywood movies in its character designs and color palettes.  Though Slave Labor publishes most of its titles in black-and-white, the colors are so important to Bombaby that SLG is publishing it in a full color, 24-page comic book with a cover price of $3.50.  The first issue of Bombaby ships in November.

While Bollywood films have not attracted a huge audience in the U.S., they definitely have developed a cult following.  Turner Classic Movies recently ran a series of classic Bollywood films, while films infused with Indian themes such as Monsoon Wedding and Bend It Like Beckham have reached a wide audience here.  It should be interesting to see if Bombaby can tap into this growing interest in Indian popular culture.
