Drawn and Quarterly has announced plans to publish a five-volume collection of Moomin strips by Tove Jansson, beginning in September.  Moomin:  The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip; Book One will reprint the first of the strips that appeared beginning in 1954 in the London Evening News, at the time the world's largest newspaper.  The 8.5' x 12' 96-page b/w  trade paperback will retail for $14.95.

The strip appeared in 40 countries, and had millions of readers.  The Moomin characters, hippo-shaped creatures with easygoing and adventurous outlooks, were featured not only in daily newspaper strips, but also in chapter books sold in North America and around the world.

The Drawn and Quarterly collections will reprint all of the strips drawn by Jannson until she handed over the reigns to her brother Lars in 1960.
