Sony has set a debut date of May 2nd, 2014 for the sequel to Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield. The July 3rd, 2012 debut of the first Amazing Spider-Man movie is still 11 months away, but Sony feels confident enough to stake out the May opening date for the sequel to the Spidey reboot (see “High Resolution Amazing Spider-Man Photos”). Early May has proven to be the ideal opening time period for superhero movies. Marvel Studios’ Thor, which opened this May, is the #1 superhero release of the year.
Mounting these major tentpoles is a massive effort that takes plenty of preparation before shooting begins and then lots of post-production time to fabricate the special effects. Sony officially began work on the Amazing Spider-Man sequel last March, when it announced that screenwriter James Vanderbilt, who worked on the screenplay for Webb’s reboot, had been hired to begin crafting the sequel (see “Movie-TV Shorts”).
