The other bit of big news to come out of today’s Disney Shareholders meeting is that Disney’s Pixar unit is planning to produce a sequel to its classic 2004 superhero comedy The Incredibles, and the best part of the announcement by Mouse House President Bob Iger was that Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the original Incredibles is writing the sequel. This new is especially heartening because Bird has steadfastly refused to revisit The Incredibles until he can, as he explained to a WonderCon audience in 2007, "come up with a story that is as good or better than the first film."
While it is true that there are far too many sequels made in Hollywood, The Incredibles has a special place in the hearts of geeks of all ages, and Pixar has made some of the best sequels ever (Toy Story 2 & Toy Story 3). So far no release date has been set for The Incredbles 2, but we can only hope that Brad Bird will direct the animated superhero sequel right after he finishes Tomorrowland.
But even Pixar isn’t perfect--Cars 2, while not nearly as bad as the critics made it out, was a disappointment as is Iger’s other Pixar pronouncement today--that the studio would be making a Cars 3. Certainly Cars is one of the most "toyetic" properties in the history of the big screen with endless merchandising possibilities, but one can only hope that the folks at Pixar are taking on the Cars 3 project only to prove that they rescue the franchise before they finally put it to bed.
