In an unusual You Tube announcement G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu and producers Jason Blum and Scooter Braum announced that they are developing a live-action film based on the 1980s Hasbro animated series Jem and Holograms. The You Tube video is directed at fans of the vintage cartoon, and the creators want to use social media to reach out to fans for suggestions concerning the music, costumes, and casting for the film. As Chu put it: "Sort of like Kickstarter, but rather than asking for money, we’re asking for your creativity."
With Transformers and G.I. Joe already established as modern movie franchises and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Beverly Hills Cop getting rebooted this year, perhaps it is time to revisit a 1980s property that appealed to women. In any case the original Jem cartoons with their mixture of music from the “pop idol” heroines combined with forays into crime-fighting could make for an interesting blend of glitz and grit.
In spite of high profile successes like the Twilight films and The Hunger Games, the female audience remains underserved by today’s Hollywood, especially in comparison to Tinseltown’s Golden Age, which was replete with popular female stars and 5-handkerchief films targeting the female audience. Perhaps it is time to give the female audience a nostalgia-rich dose of a revived 1980s property.
