As a culture, bohemians have been very misunderstood by people throughout history. Many people seem to have more than a few preconceived notions about them which may or may not even be true. While the world of the bohemians is wide and varied, this book attempts to shed some light on a small part of it through comics and text. In the aptly titled book Bohemians edited by Paul Buhle and David Berger, this world is brought forward into the sunshine where everyone can see it and learn from the culture.
Throughout the 200+ pages, the people and places that make up the lifestyle are tackled in detail by various artists and writers who wish to show that these people, while different in their lifestyle choices, are not strange, but rather just average folks who see the world at large in a much different way.
This is a book for adults who want to learn something new but don't want to be force fed facts and trivia through the usual textbook manner. Filled with facts and knowledge about writers and artists that date all the way back to the 19th century, this is a collection that celebrates the culture and revels in sharing it with others.
It is admittedly not going to be for everyone though. With so many different creators collaborating to create this book, the changes in art and writing style from story to story might be jarring for some individuals. Overall, this isn't a bad book at all and it wouldn't be shocking if it were to generate some discussion amongst those who have read it.
