Documentary producer Morgan Spurlock, who previously covered comics fandom in his San Diego Comic-Con documentary Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope, has turned his camera on My Little Pony fans in a new documentary release premiering in July.
A Brony Tale is the first release under Executive Producer Morgan Spurlock’s (Super Size Me, One Direction: This is Us) "Morgan Spurlock Presents" label. Directed by Canadian Brent Hodge (CBC’s Winning America, The Cockumentary), the movie will premiere in theaters on July 8th, and come to Video on Demand on July 15th. It follows Hodge as he learns about what he says are the estimated three million adult males in the United States that identify as fans of the cartoon show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (although by Brony census statistics, that number seems a bit low, see "12 Million Bronies").
The main thread of the documentary follows Canadian voice actress Ashleigh Ball, who voices Applejack and Rainbow Dash on the show, on her journey to the 2012 BronyCon event in New York City as she meets members of the fandom.
The documentary may have been filmed too early to include Enterplay’s My Little Pony CCG (see "Summer 'MLP CCG' Releases") or the IDW Publishing My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic comic either (see "IDW Does 'My Little Pony'"). But regardless of specific product references, it sounds like a nice celebration of the phenomenon.
And Spurlock has a knack for capturing the zeitgeist, and this is another sign that hard core fandom is now a big part of that.
