We round up last week’s previously un-covered stories on comic-based TV shows, with the first pic from Powers, a comparison of Marvel and DC’s TV strategy, and casting news for Arrow and Agent Carter.
The new series based on Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s Powers for the Playstation Network is well into shooting the first season, according to USA Today. The show’s been filming in Atlanta for four weeks; ten episodes are planned for the first season. Bendis is exec producer on the show, but is not resisting differences between the comic and the TV series (see "Brian Michael Bendis' 'Powers' Adds Leads"). Sharto Copley is Christian Walker, Susan Heyward is his partner, Michelle Forbes is Retro Girl, and David Slade is directing (at least the first few episodes).
DC CCO Geoff Johns argues that DC’s strategy of keeping its film and TV universes separate gives the creators of both more freedom, as opposed to the Marvel strategy of mixing the universes between film and TV, according to Variety. "We want to give freedom to creators… so that they can take their passion [and make] the best show, the best film, the best game without having to tie it into other things," he said.
On the other hand Joss Whedon, who directed The Avengers and created Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for television, took the opposite view. "The fact that it is one universe means that when something occurs on our show or a character makes a turn, it ripples through the entire universe, which gives it much more weight," Whedon said. "It adds the seal of approval of all those other cinematic franchises."
Nick Tarabay will play Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang in Arrow, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He’s scheduled to appear in the seventh and eighth episodes of Season 3, according to the report. Episode 8 will be part of a Flash crossover. Tarabay is the third Spartacus alum to appear on the series; Manue Bennett as Deathstroke and Katrina Law as Nyssa al Ghul are the other two.
James D’Arcy will co-star in Agent Carter, the S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off series that’s premiering on ABC this fall, according to Variety, opposite Hayley Atwell, who plays the lead (see "ABC Orders 'Marvel's Agent Carter'"). He’ll play Howard Stark’s butler, according to the report.
