Dark Horse will release a new edition of Rod Espinosa’s The Courageous Princess along with two volumes of new material, the company announced.

Espinosa’s The Courageous Princess is the story of Princess Mabelrose, an independent princess with enough brains and bravery to rescue herself when she runs into trouble.  The first story arc was originally released by Antarctic Press, and was nominated for two Ignatz Awards in 2000 (Promising New Talent and Best Artist) and an Eisner Award in 2002 (Best Title for Younger Readers).  Two additional stories (now included in Dark Horse’s first volume, Beyond the Hundred Kingdoms) were released by Antarctic as Volume 2: The Quest to Home, and Vol. 3: The Kingdom of Leptia.  Antarctic released a “Masterwork” edition of all three stories in 2005.  The first Dark Horse volume, The Courageous Princess: Beyond the Hundred Kingdoms, will be a new edition of the collected work in a 240-page, 6” x 9" hardcover, releasing March 11 at $19.99.

Espinosa (Neotopia, Rod Espinosa’s Steampunk Fables) explained the genesis of the two volumes of new material to ICv2.  "Originally, it was only supposed to be a sequel, (a) Book 2," he said.  "But as some folks know... I have a way of just getting out of control with page counts.  So Book 2, originally just meant to be as large or slightly larger than Book 1 at 240 pages, ballooned into this 400 page monster."

Dark Horse will release this new material as The Courageous Princess: The Unremembered Lands in June, and the third volume, The Dragon Queen, will follow in September.  Both volumes will include over 200 pages of new material.
