EBay is looking at potential job cuts in the thousands, according to the Wall Street Journal.  The cuts would take place in the marketplace division, where over half of its sales take place.  Cuts of 3,000, the number being contemplated, would be around 10% of eBay’s total workforce.

EBay is spinning off its Paypal unit next year, divorcing the payment systems from the commerce portion of the company.  That would leave around 16,000 employees at eBay before any cuts.  EBay’s marketplace unit had sales of around $2.16 billion in the most recent quarter, up around 6% from the year ago period.
