Catalyst Game Labs has announced two games based on the History Channel series Vikings for 2015. Vikings: The Board Game is directed at the "Lords of Waterdeep-and-beyond crowd," according to Catalyst Managing Developer Randall N. Bills, and Jarl: The Vikings Tile Laying Game, the earlier release of the two, is a game "that almost anyone can sit down and enjoy." The license is from MGM Consumer Products; the show is from MGM Television.
Jarl: The Vikings Tile Laying Game is planned for Spring 2015 release. The mechanic is based on Catalyst’s game The Duke (which it had at Gen Con in giant form this year, see "Gen Con 2014 Photos--Part 1"), and the Vikings version and the core game can even be played together. In the game, players flip their tiles (warriors) over after each time they move to a new spot on the board. Ending a movement on a square occupied by an opponent’s tile allows its capture, and if the Jarl is captured, the game is over.
Jarl: The Vikings Tile Laying Game is played by Ragnar, Rollo, Filoki and even the Earl in the long winters between raiding seasons to keep their intellects sharp.
The game is for two players ages 13 or over, and can be played in 15-25 minutes.
In Vikings: The Board Game, two to five players will scheme to acquire resources each winter, trying to convince others such as Ragnar Lothbrok, Lagertha, Rollo and Floki to support them as they put their longships in the water each summer to go on raids. The game surface is made from modular tiles for high replayability, and players will plunder treasures and foreign resources across the board and complete offers to the Seer to win.
