TVShowsonDVD.com is reporting that Shout! Factory is preparing to release a DVD set including all 24 episodes of the Sam & Max Freelance Police cartoon series from 1997-1998.  The cartoons were based on characters created by Steve Purcell for a comic book series that debuted in 1987.  The Sam & Max comics were published in a graphic novel collection, The Collected Sam & Max: Surfin' the Highway in 1995 (published by Marlowe & Company and now out of print -- copies are currently going for big bucks on Amazon).

The property is probably best known because of a computer game, Sam & Max Hit the Road.  A sequel was announced by LucasArts, but never released.  Last October the first chapter of a new episodic Sam & Max game, Culture Shock, was released via GameTap.

The games, like the original comics, often include savage parodies of American culture delivered with a dark, sardonic twist.  The Sam & Max cartoon series, which appeared on the Fox network, was much milder in its satirical sorties than the comics or computer games, but still had enough bite to develop a devoted following.
