FUNimation Downsizes

And Shuts Down Anime Online

Published: 07/23/2007 12:00am

Anime powerhouse FUNimation has reduced its staff, reportedly by around 10%.  In conjunction with the reduction in force, FUNimation shut down Anime Online, its shortlived attempt to create a broad-based news and social networking site for anime fans.  Anime Online had launched in February into a crowded space with skilled competitors.

Asked for comment, a FUNimation spokesperson confirmed the staff reductions, stating that the move was made '...to ensure that we continue to provide the highest quality products for anime fans while maximizing the company's profitability.'

The spokesperson also noted the shutdown of Anime Online.  'We've gained tremendous knowledge from this beta test and look forward to integrating this knowledge in future endeavors,' the spokesperson said.
