Mary Alice Wilson of Dark Star Books and Comics in Yellow Springs, Ohio saw responses to Steve Bennett’s recent column on low-selling titles (see “Confessions of a Comic Book Guy--Just Say No”) and believes readers may be missing the point of the column.

Does anyone besides me read ALL of Steve's column, or do you all just look for a sentence or three to disagree with?  His point is that Marvel/ DC squeezes time, energy, rack space and money from retailers so it is tough  to deal with: great age-friendly titles (Amelia Rules, Korgi, Owly); important projects (Scorchy Smith, Steranko); bright, wonderful, creative books (Girl Genius, Persepolis); international comics (Asterix, Tintin); notice any common threads in these titles?  NO heartless, soulless, mindless pap and nada from the big two.

Over the past 26 years, many with Steve in tow, we've carried and promoted a lot of small press titles: Goldfish (Brian who?), Popgun, Barry Ween (I dunno, some guy named Winick), Golddigger, Furrlough, PS 238, Milk and Cheese...

We are extremely happy that our shop, having handed over the weekly pamphlets business to Superfly Comics, doesn't have to worry about how many of this month's 15 Bat/Spidey/X-Men titles to order.
