The oft-delayed Mutant Chronicles Collectible Miniatures Game is undergoing a fundamental format change as Fantasy Flight Games has decided to release the games’ miniatures in a non-random window box format. The game will launch with a Starter Set (SRP $29.95) containing six high quality plastic miniatures and everything two players need to play the game.

Since the Starter Sets are standard, the format change will affect the BoostersFFG is now in the process of repackaging the Mutant Chronicles CMG Booster Packs in the new format.  In the new non-random incarnation the minis intended for the initial set of the Mutant Chronicles CMG Boosters are being repackaged into 14 different skus, each of which will contain 3-4 minis and carry an SRP of $19.95.  The first skus should be at retail in early August with all 14 skus becoming available over a 10-12 week period.  Customers will be able to see exactly what they are buying and assemble their forces accordingly.

The move parallels what FFG has been doing in moving from blind pack purchase to fixed-pack merchandising with some of its card games.

The Mutant Chronicles CMG is based on Mutant Chronicles RPG developed by Target Games in Sweden in 1993.  A Mutant Chronicles movie directed by Simon Hunter and starring Thomas Jane, John Malkovich, Ron Perlman, and Devon Aoki is scheduled for release in 2008.

FFG’s Mutant Chronicles CMG has taken a while to get to market (see “Mutant Chronicles CMG Delayed”), but with the impending release of the Mutant Chronicles movie and taking account of trends with the miniatures game marketplace, it is quite possible that the delays and changes in format may improve the game’s chances of success in a highly competitive market.
