At the end of an election season during which comic books became more involved in a presidential campaign than ever before (see “When Comics Attack!”), Marvel Comics has announced that it is adding a special 5-page story written by Zeb Wells in which Spider-Man thwarts a plot to disrupt the swearing-in of the 44th President of the United States to Amazing Spider-Man #583, which will be available in comic shops on Wednesday January 14th, just in time for the inauguration on January 20th.  Marvel has commissioned a special variant cover from Phil Jimenez featuring the President-Elect and his favorite wallcrawler.

Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada explained the Inauguration surprise: “When we heard that President-Elect Obama is a collector of Spider-Man comics, we knew that these two historic figures had to meet in our comics’ Marvel Universe. Historic moments such as this one can be reflected in our comics because the Marvel Universe is set in the real world.  A Spider-Man fan moving into the Oval Office is an event that must be commemorated in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man.”
