Columbia has won an auction for the movie rights to Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy, according to Variety.  Columbia beat out Warner Bros. and Fox for the rights.  The film is set to be directed by Roland Emmerich, who directed Godzilla, Independence Day, and Stargate, among others. 

 

The Foundation trilogy is a classic work of science fiction originally published in the 40s and 50s.  It tells the story of an attempt to preserve the knowledge of mankind in the midst of a galactic collapse of civilization.
