Variety is reporting that New Regency has acquired the screen rights to the Radical Publishing comic book series Freedom Formula: Ghost of the Wasteland, which will be developed as a directing vehicle for helmer Bryan Singer (X-Men, X-Men 2, Superman Returns).  Michael Finch is writing the screenplay and Fox will distribute the film.  With distribution in place, a studio behind it, and a top line director attached, Freedom Formula appears to have a decent chance to make it to the big screen.

Singer will also produce the film along with Radical’s Barry Levine.  They have been working on the project since the comic book debuted last year at San Diego (see “Singer Seeks Freedom Formula”).  The anime-influenced Freedom Formula is a Top Gun-like saga set in a futuristic world where powered mecha-like exo-skeletons have replaced fighter jets and tanks.  According to Variety, Singer and Levine are pleased with Finch’s concept for the film, which Levine described as “an incredible take that goes deeper into the mythology of the source material.”
