As surely as summer follows spring, sequels are the inevitable result of big box office openings, and the Scooby-Doo film is no exception to that rule.  The retro-cartoon-based flick topped the box office last weekend (see 'Scooby-Does'), and Variety is now reporting that Warner Brothers has exercised sequel options for all four of the film's lead characters (including Sarah Michelle Gellar) and the studio is also negotiating with the film's director, Raja Gosnell, in the hopes of securing his services for a second Scooby-Doo film.  Warner Bros. plans to start filming in early 2003 with the release of 'Scooby-Two' set for the summer of 2004.  Writer James Gunn, who penned the current film, will write the sequel.

The Cartoon Network, which just scored excellent ratings with four nights of Scooby-Doo  animated shows, is certain to keep the original cartoon series highly visible on cable television, while the WB network is preparing a new Scooby-Doo animated series  for broadcast TV (see 'New Scooby Doo Animated Series for the WB').  Inkworks, which has created a series of trading cards based on the Scooby-Doo film, plans to do a series based on the classic animated series later this year.  With Scooby-Doo comics available from DC, and toys from Equity Marketing (see 'Austin Powers, Animal House, Scooby-Doo & More'), retailers should have plenty of means to exploit this property.
