Warner Home Video has announced the November release of Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut on DVD and Blu-ray disc.  The 5-Disc Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut DVD has an MSRP of $43.87, while the 4-Disc Blu-ray version has an MSRP of $59.99.  The Ultimate Cut editions feature the animated Tales of the Black Freighter sequence cut into the film in roughly the same fashion as the Tales of the Black Freighter meta-comic is employed in the graphic novel as well as all new commentary tracks by director Zack Snyder and Watchmen graphic novel co-creator Dave Gibbons.

Both the DVD and Blu-ray (BD) versions of Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut also include the “Under the Hood” documentary, which is the rough equivalent of the pages of documentary prose material included in the Watchmen graphic novel, plus all 12 episodes of the Watchmen Motion Comic and a digital copy of the theatrical feature.

Over 2.1 million copies of the previously released Watchmen DVDs, which included a Director’s Cut (see “Watchmen Director’s Cut Review”) as well as a no frills edition, have already been sold.  The Watchmen DVDs have generated some $45 million in sales here in the U.S., which is more than 40% of the total that the film earned at the domestic box office.  The studio gets to keep a much bigger share of DVD revenues than the roughly 50% that it receives from the box office tally, which explains why the studios have such a hard time resisting the urge to engage in double and sometimes even triple-dipping in the DVD trough.
