For decades, the character of Lucky Luke has delighted readers in a host of languages.  The stories present the old west as shown in classic western movies, rather than with historical accuracy, but often tidbits of real history sneak in.  This volume is one such historical story.

The real Judge Roy Bean is often portrayed as a self-appointed hanging judge and saloon owner, often as crooked as the men he tried in his Texas courtroom.  In reality, his judgeship was legitimate, although he frequently bent the rules of law and jurisdiction, and he rarely hanged anyone.  The rest of the charges laid by history are true, though, and this volume of Lucky Luke turns them into a classic comedy western.  A crooked gambler tries to compete with Roy Bean, both as a judge and as a saloon keeper, with predictably chaotic results.  The translation from French into English, leaving bits of Spanish and Latin intact, was very good.

The artwork is of the cartoony style typical of the work of Goscinny, Morris and their friends in their European graphic albums over the decades.  The laws of physics are never allowed to hold back a good sight gag.

While the series is generally suitable for all ages, there is violence and use of alcohol in this story that might make it unsuitable for younger children.  It’s not for everyone, but will delight those who can appreciate the setting and the humor.
