Mayor Gavin Newsom has vetoed the partial ban on Happy Meal toys in San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.  The ban, passed by the city council, provided that toys could not be given away with fast food meals that did not meet certain nutritional standards, including limits on calories, salt, fat, and sugar; and did not contain fruits and vegetables.

The ban originally passed the city council by a margin sufficient to over-ride the mayor’s veto, should the council decide to go that way.

Comedian Lewis Black talked about the ban on the Daily Show last week.  "So let me get this straight," Black said.  “The town that gives away clean syringes to heroin addicts won't let your kid have a Buzz Lightyear with his Happy Meal? Because it sends the wrong message?”
