As reported here last week, Joss Whedon’s The Avengers will be filmed in New Mexico (see “Avengers to Start Shooting in April”).  Naturally the news that such a major production was heading to the southwestern state, which also hosted the production of much of Marvel’s Thor, created quite a buzz in the local media.  The sharp-eyed folks at  Ain’t It Cool News noted that coverage of The Avengers in The Albuquerque Journal (not available online) also included a previously unrevealed (and still unconfirmed) tidbit about the superhero ensemble film, which according to the Journal,  “will blend Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger storylines as the Avengers battle two alien races, the Skrulls and the Kree.”

Now the long-running conflict between the Skrulls and the Kree, which erupted on the planet Hala and spread to Earth, is well-known to Marvel comics fans. “The Kree-Skrull War” was a key story arc written by Roy Thomas that appeared in Avengers #89-#97 back in the early 1970s.  The reptilian shape-shifting Skrulls, of course, were also the prime villains in the highly popular Secret Invasion crossover event that rocked the Marvel Universe in 2008.

The formidable Skrulls seem like a great fit for The Avengers movie, but so far their involvement has not been confirmed.
