It’s a long way from the four-color page to the silver screen and many comic book properties that get optioned never make it past the earliest stages of development. But over the past weekend three comic book-based projects took their initial steps toward development as writers were assigned to develop screenplays for War Machine, Brodie’s Law, and Ascend.

The least is known about  what is potentially the biggest of the three projects. Actor Don Cheadle, who played War Machine in Iron Man 2, told MTV that a writer had been hired to create a War Machine screenplay, though he didn’t reveal who the scribe’s identity or provide any additional information.

According to Comics2Film, Gary Young, who wrote the screenplay for Michael Caine’s well-received geezer revenge flick Harry Brown, has signed on to adapt Daley Osiyemi and David Bircham’s Brodie’s Law.

Comics2Film also reports that Gregory Widen, the creator of The Highlander franchise, will adapt Keith Arem’s Ascend for the big screen. Ascend, which features art by Christopher Shy, was originally published by Image in 2005 and reissued by IDW Publishing in 2008.
