A number of actresses are competing for the role of the Daily Planet’s second most famous reporter in the new Superman film being directed by Zack Snyder.  With a release date of December 2012, there is an urgency to the casting of the film, which will likely require lots of time-consuming post-production special effects.

With the announcement that English actor Henry Cavill will play the Man of Steel (see “Henry Cavill is Superman”), the next major news to emanate from the film could be the identity of the actress who will play Clark Kent’s female foil, newshound competitor, and love interest.

According to the Hollywood Insider, five actresses either read for or have been asked to read for the part including Jessica Biel (Blade Trinity), Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Dianna Agron (Glee), and Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes).

According to the Insider, Kristen Stewart is too busy with other prime acting opportunities and Akerman who worked with Snyder on Watchmen is too old at 32 now that the 27 year-old Cavill will play Clark Kent.

On the other hand, Dianna Agron, who plays a blonde cheerleader on Glee, may just look too young to be able to play the role of a competent professional reporter convincingly.

That leaves the athletic Jessica Biel and the willowy and talented Rachel McAdams.  Each would bring something interesting to the role, but don’t be surprised if the prized part goes to someone else entirely.  After all Margot Kidder was hardly a household name when she made the role of Lois Lane her own in the series of big budget movies that began in 1978, and Snyder has in the past shown a propensity to choose relative unknowns for key roles in films such as 300, Watchmen, and the forthcoming Sucker Punch.
