Paramount has chosen Jon Chu to direct the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Chu, who directed the Justin Bieber concert documentary, Never Say Never, and the dance epics Step Up 2 The Streets and Step Up 3D, was chosen over F. Gary Gray (see “Paramount Narrows Search for G.I. Joe Helmer”).

Paramount is trying to get G.I. Joe 2 ready to serve as a summer 2012 tentpole, since the studio has sold distribution rights  for to Marvel Studios’ The Avengers back to Disney. But the cast of G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra may not all return for the sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the very busy Joseph Gordon-Levitt may not be back as one of the villains, and Sienna Miller is also “unlikely” to return as The Baroness.
