HBO has released a new longer trailer for A Game of Thrones, its10-part adaptation of the first novel in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series of medieval fantasy novels. Set on the mythical continent of Westeros where seven kingdoms are involved in a dynastic civil war, A Game of Thrones is filled with intrigue, swordplay, and skullduggery, and this trailer provides some glimpses of the complex and compelling plot of a series that HBO likes to refer to as “The Sopranos with swords.”

According to Deadline, HBO will present a full 15-minute preview special prior to its broadcasting of the third part of its new Mildred Pierce miniseries at 9pm (ET, PT) on April 3rd. Mildred Pierce, which debuts on March 27th, stars Kate Winslet and is directed by Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven), is based on the novel by James M. Cain. The Mildred Pierce and A Game of Thrones miniseries represent HBO’s major dramatic efforts for 2011.

Dynamite and Bantam's comic book adaptation of A Song of Fire and Ice debuts this spring, and Martin's next novel in the cycle, A Dance With Dragons is due out this summer, while Fantasy Flight's A Game of Thrones board game should also benefit from the HBO series.
