Joss Whedon announced on his Whedonverse blog that principal photography on The Avengers movie will begin today, April 25th. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, Whedon wrote: “We’ll be shooting the pivotal death/betrayal/product placement/setting up the sequel/coming out scene.”

In his blog letter to fans, Whedon jokes that just as he is about to reveal the location of the film’s shooting he is visited by Marvel’s lawyers who take his keyboard and “unfluff” his pillows. Most of The Avengers will be filmed in New Mexico with additional scenes shot in New York City and Cleveland.

Whedon, whose attempt to write and direct a major Wonder Woman film for Warner Bros. was scuttled by the studio, noted: "I've been looking forward to this for about 46 years."

The Avengers, which stars Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, and Clarg Gregg, is slated to open on May 4, 2012.
