Justin Lin, whose been attached to the Highlander remake since late 2009 (see “Summit Rebooting ‘Highlander’”) is leaving the project, but his departure may actually be good news for fans who want to hear “There can be only one” emanating from the big screen once again.  With the success of Fast Five Lin’s schedule has filled up—the up-and-coming director has been linked to major projects such as the reboot of the Terminator franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lin’s schedule didn’t mesh with Summit Entertainment’s desire to get going right away on a reboot of the Highlander franchise.  Summit is very eager to develop new fantasy tentpoles to replace its hugely successful Twilight Saga franchise, which ends in 2012.

Summit likes the new Highlander script by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway and is “moving immediately to find a new helmer” for the fantasy remake.  Don’t be surprised if a new director is named in the very near future.
