While DC Comics has steadfastly refused to confirm that a series of prequel stories for the characters in Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen are currently in the planning stages, Bleeding Cool now says that its stories about the prequels have been confirmed “quite conclusively by a reliable source at DC Comics."

According to Bleeding Cool, Andy Kubert will be drawing one of the four Watchmen prequel miniseries, and “he may not be the only Kubert getting involved with this.”  As was previously reported (see “New Watchmen Comics”), Darwyn Cooke (Parker) is creating the over-arching storyline for the prequels. Other artists and writers whose names have been linked to Watchmen prequels include Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons, J.G. Jones, JMS, and John Higgins.

It appears that Alan Moore remains implacably opposed to the creation of any additional Watchmen comics—and given the narrative perfection of the original Watchmen miniseries, which is easily the bestselling graphic novel of all time, the author’s opposition is understandable.  The aesthetic bar against which the “prequels” will be measured is extremely high, which probably explains DC’s reluctance to go public with the project before the publisher has all its ducks in a row.
