For the comic world the big news might be that Jakks Pacific's new Avengers Mighty Battle board game, which was unveiled at Toy Fair, contained a plastic alien figure that nine comic book readers out of ten would identify as a “Skrull.”  But for hobby game retailers the big news is the game itself.  Joss Whedon’s Avengers movie, which opens May 4th, has a chance to be one of 2012’s biggest box office hits.  If the game, which does feature graphics from the film, hits the market at the right time, it could have appeal to both comic and movie collectors as well as the growing audience for family-oriented board games.  Look for more details on this product in the very near future.

Meanwhile, does the game tell us anything else in addition to the fact that the movie has a Skrull-like villain?   Well the object of the game is to defeat those Skrull-like aliens in the “battle for the Cosmic Cube.”  Is this the same “Cosmic Cube” created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby that first appeared in Tales of Suspense #79 in July of 1966?  Does Whedon’s film also involve the battle for the “Cosmic Cube”?
