American Splendor, based on the comics of Harvey Pekar, was awarded the Grand Jury Prize, the top award for a dramatic film, at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival this weekend. The film incorporates archival video, animation, and film of Pekar to tell its story. The film was produced to be shown on HBO; given the attention this award will generate, the odds for an arthouse theatrical release seem good. Regardless, increased attention will benefit sales of the comics from Dark Horse and trade paperbacks from Four Walls Eight Windows Publishing.
