Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Animation have announced the September 25th, 2012 release of The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, the first half of a two-part animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s classic Batman saga.  The PG-13 rated release will be the 15th animated film produced by Warner Bros. Animation featuring the DC Comics heroes, and given the prestige and standing of the material being adapted, this is easily the most ambitious project in the series. Part 2 of the adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns will be released in early 2013.

Warner Bros. recently released the first trailer for the new animated Batman film (see "'Dark Knight Returns' Trailer").  On September 25th, the first half of the animated adaptation will be available both on DVD and in a Blu-ray Combo Pack as well as On Demand and for Download.  The Blu-ray Combo Pack will come with a DVD of the film as well as the BD and an UltraViolet copy.  It will also contain two full hours of extras including a sneak preview of Part 2 of the adaptation,  plus "Batman and Me: The Bob Kane Story," two bonus episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, and a digital comics teaser consisting of the cover and 3 interior pages from the Dark Knight Returns graphic novel.

The retail prices of the various iterations of The Dark Knight Returns have not yet been released.
