The Walt Disney Company has staked a claim on May 1st, 2015 for the debut of Avengers 2, the sequel to 2012’s most successful film to date. Joss Whedon, who wrote and directed The Avengers, which has earned $617.3 million domestically and $1.46 billion internationally, will return to both write and direct the sequel (see "Whedon to Direct 'Avengers 2'").

The first weekend in May, which is also the date for "Free Comic Book Day," has become one of the most coveted spots on the theatrical motion picture release calendar, thanks to a number of very successful launches of summer blockbusters going back to Sony’s original Spider-Man movie in 2002.  So it’s no surprise that according to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has selected that date for The Avengers sequel, and given the tremendous success of Whedon’s first Avengers movie, it is quite likely that the other studios will give that May 1st, 2015 date a pretty wide berth.
