Ronald D. Moore, one of the key producers of the revamped Battlestar Galactica, has announced that production has begun on a 13-episode adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series of novels.  The science fiction/romance/fantasy is a time-traveling saga about a modern woman who suddenly finds herself in mid-18th Century Scotland.

The Outlander saga straddles multiple genres and Starz is clearly hoping to replicate the success that HBO has experienced with its adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones.  In 2010 Random House published The Exile: An Outlander Graphic Novel, which is loosely based on the first novel in the series, but which also features a new story line and a different perspective on the story, which is told from a different point of view than the novels.  The Exile graphic novel, which was illustrated by Hoang Nguyen, was a major hit in the bookstore market, and could undergo a major revival in the new Starz Outlander TV series is a hit.
