Legendary Comics will release the original graphic novel Godzilla: Awakenings on May 7, nine days before Legendary’s new Godzilla movie opens on May 16 (see "First Official 'Godzilla' Trailer").

The 72-page story will be co-written by Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein and Greg Borenstein, with interior art by Eric Battle, Yvel Guichet, Alan Quah, and Lee Loughridge, and cover art by Arthur Adams.  It will be set decades before the film and “pave the way” for the film story, according to director Gareth Edwards, who released a video with the announcement.  MSRP will be $19.99.

A Legendary spokesperson clarified that "the book takes place in the world of the movie, but decades before.  If you are asking if the movie picks up where the book leaves off, the correlation is not that direct."

The license for the Legendary Comics graphic novel is based on the Legendary film, according to a spokesperson for the publisher; separately, IDW Publishing has confirmed with ICv2 that its license for Godzilla comics and graphic novels is ongoing.
