R & R Games will release the English language version of Hanabi Deluxe in late October or early November.  ICv2 spoke with R & R’s President, Frank DiLorenzo at last week’s Gen Con.

“It’s a tile game version of the card game.  Kind of like a Mah Jhong tile, basically, DiLorenzo explained. “So it’s a set of those tiles in a very nice box.  You play it on the table rather than holding it in your hand.”

Hanabi Deluxe was released in German at last year’s Spiel game fair in Essen, Germany by AbacusSpiele.  It was packaged in a hinged wooden box and featured thick black bakelite tiles with colorful artwork.

Since its release, Hanabi has been a huge critical and commercial success, earning the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award (see "'Hanabi' Is 'Spiel des Jahres 2013'") and selling hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide.

"It’s been absolutely incredible," DiLorenzo said of the game’s popularity.  "We literally have been bringing in containers of 30,000 to 50,000 units at a time.  We have 30,000 coming in, they’ll be gone in a week.  [We’ve printed] well over 150,000 at this point."

The English version of the game sold more than 100,000 copies in its first year (see "'Hanabi' Sales Top 106,000").
