At Gen Con, ICv2 spoke with Nikki Guiney, Operations Manager with MERC Miniatures / Megacon Games about Emergence Event and MERCS: Recon, the company’s newest upcoming releases, which were premiering at the show.  Both games will be releasing to trade by the end of the third quarter.

The space exploration board game Emergence Event is the first game the company is releasing that was not also Kickstarted.  “It’s a standalone, turn based space exploration game. It’s designed by Kenny Sims, one of the co-writers on Myth.” Guiney said.   “It’s one of those games where you have to use your brain a little bit, but not so much that you feel you have to take notes;  and at the end, whether you won epically or lost epically, you just had a lot of fun.“

Players in this modular tile game are captains of space ships from different races, competing to explore and control locations in the galaxy by collecting resources, artifacts and technology.  The game is for 2-4 players and has an MSRP of $65.00.

MERCS: Recon is a cooperative, standalone game set in the MERCS world.  Players infiltrate an opposing MegaCon office, fighting in tight quarters, attempting to capture and interrogate employees as well as secure locations and mission objectives while facing an increasingly dangerous AI that controls the building.  Each box contains 20 plastic miniatures, 10 player boards, 44 cards, 15 custom dice, 29 variable office tiles, and more.  The game is for 1-5 player, plays in about an hour and has an MSRP of $50.00.

The company was also demoing a new MERCS RPG tabletop at Gen Con, which is currently in beta, with plans for release in 2015.

MERC Miniatures, LLC/Megacon Games is the maker of the Origins Award-nominated MERCS combat skirmish miniatures game (see “Origins Nominations Announced”), and they recently released the fantasy board game Myth (see “MYTH' Fantasy Game”), which came in at #4 on ICv2’s Spring Game Chart (see “Top 10 Board Games--Spring 2014”) and also held a spot on the Top 10 Tabletop Kickstarters chart for a time (see “Top 10 Tabletop Game Kickstarters”).
