X-Men screenwriter and executive producer Simon Kinberg recently shared character details for which mutants will be featured in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse film (see "Bryan Singer to Direct 'X-Men: Apocalypse'") in a Q&A session on Yahoo Movies.

Kinberg, who has scripted X-Men: The Last Stand, as well as Days of Future Past and the upcoming Apocalypse film and the Gambit solo film (see "Channing Tatum Confirmed as Gambit"), was answering questions from fans while promoting the upcoming Days of Future Past home video release in October (see "Deluxe Treatment for 'X-Men: DOFP' Blu-ray Collectors Set").  He confirmed that mutants from the future timeline in Days of Future Past will not be featured in Apocalypse. "That really follows the stories of the First Class X-Men.  In future X-Men films, perhaps, but Apocalypse focuses on the ‘past’ of Days of Future Past."

As for any of the original X-Men cast (Storm, Cyclops, Jean Grey) appearing in Apocalypse, he said, "If we included some of the original X-Men: Storm, Jean, Scott and others, in Apocalypse, yeah we’d have to recast them, because Apocalypse takes place a good 20 years before X-1."  He admitted it would be hard to recast for such iconic roles.  "But I also would have said before First Class that no way we could find actors that could stand alongside Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart.  I think we managed to with Michael and James finding their own interpretations of the characters, not doing an impersonation.  Are we going to have to recast?  IF some of those characters are in the movie, we would, but we will see."
