David Lynch & Mark Frost, the creators of the original Twin Peaks series, the ultimate “watercooler” serial drama of the 1990s, have announced that the spooky Northwest mystery saga will be revived in a new nine-episode season that will be set in the present day.  Filming is expected to begin in 2015 for airing in 2016 on the Showtime premium cable network.  Mark Frost will write all nine of the new episodes and David Lynch will direct every episode.

The original Twin Peaks appeared on ABC, but with the locus of the creation of cutting-edge TV now firmly established in the world of cable TV, it is not surprising that the new series, which the two creators announced on YouTube and Twitter, has found a home at Showtime.

No announcements yet about casting or whether any of the original cast members will reprise their roles, but Kyle MacLachlan, who is currently appearing on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., recently tweeted a photo that shows him dining with Lynch (though not, as EW points out, at the beloved Double R Diner).

All 39 episodes of the original Twin Peaks series made their way into a new hi-def Blu-ray edition that was released in 2014 (see "DVD Round-Up: 'Noah,' 'Twin Peaks,' 'Adventure Time,' & 'MLP'").
