Confidential Sony documents reveal that the company had discussions with Disney about cooperating on the Spider-Man movie franchise, including a guest appearance by Spider-Man in Captain America 3, according to the Wall Street Journal.
A leaked e-mail from just over a month ago discussed a Disney proposal for Marvel Studios to produce the next trilogy of Spider-Man films with Sony retaining "creative control, marketing, and distribution." The proposal for a guest appearance by Spider-Man in Captain America was mentioned in a separate leaked e-mail from Sony Pictures CEO Kaz Kirai to a business partner.
The documents were released by hackers that attacked Sony in November, stealing documents and planting malware on the company’s computers. The attack appears linked to Sony’s planned release of the Seth Rogen comedy The Interview, in which characters played by Rogen and James Franco are recruited to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.
The Disney-Sony talks over Spider-Man broke down, and Sony is now pursuing its own development plans, according to the report. Those plans include an animated Spider-Man comedy produced by the team responsible for 22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, along with the Sony live action slate, which includes various Spider-Man and Spider-Man spin-off movies. A "Spidey summit" is planned for January to sort out the options.
