The BBC has announced that its long search for the actor to play the ninth Doctor Who has come to an end, with Christopher Eccleston being chosen for the role.

Writer Russell T. Davies has worked with Eccleston before and commented that, 'We considered many great actors for this wonderful part, but Christopher was our first choice.'  Davies, according to the BBC, went on to say that Eccleston, 'genuinely loves Doctor Who. This man can give the Doctor a wisdom, wit and emotional range as far-reaching as the Doctor's travels in time and space.'

With filming beginning in and around Cardiff in May, the new Doctor Who (Eccleston) enthusiastically commented, 'Doctor Who? And Russell T. Davies! Tell me which way to Cardiff because I can't wait.'

This announcement completes the all-important triumvirate of writer (see 'The BBC Revives Doctor Who'), male lead and female star (see 'Doctor Who's New Female Companion Will Be Action Heroine').  So, to borrow from another BBC favorite, the game is afoot!
