Fox has moved the Fantastic Four movie off the July 4th weekend; it will now open Friday, July 8th, leaving the holiday weekend to War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise (see 'Fantastic Four vs. War of the Worlds').  Fantastic Four will now compete with Bewitched. 

The move of Fantastic Four illustrates the risks in tying a major promotion like Free Comic Book Day to the release of a film -- the studios can change the release date.  This year, comic retailers voted to hold Free Comic Book Day on the first weekend of May (see 'May Wins Hands Down') instead of in conjunction with the release of a comic-based film. 

The first weekend in May 2006 also has two major action flicks head to head.  It's the release date for both X-Men 3, and the recently announced date for Warners' Poseiden Adventure.
