The Eisner Award nominations were released on Wednesday, with Chris Ware and Warren Ellis topping the nominees with seven and six nominations, respectively.  Close behind were Brian K Vaughan J.H. Williams III with five each.

DC had 28 nominations for its various imprints; Image was second with ten; Drawn and Quarterly had nine, and Pantheon had eight.

As indicated by the top publishers, superheroes and comics lit were the most popular categories in the awards.  Manga was largely ignored.  Even in the category that seems the best fit, 'Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material,' only one manga title, ADV's Cromartie High School, was nominated.

Winners will be announced at the San Diego Comic-Con.  Eisner Awards and nominations are valuable marketing tools for retailers, and often help point out titles that have been overlooked or under-merchandised.
