Anime News Service is reporting that Gainax and Shaft will produce a second season of the Mahou Sensei Negima anime, based on the manga by Ken Akamatsu, which is published in the U.S. by Del Rey, and which has consistently ranked in the top ten manga properties as determined by ICv2 in the Retailers Guide to Anime/Manga.  The new Gainax-produced Negima anime will debut on TV Tokyo in the fall of 2006.

Xebec, not Gainax, produced the first 26-episode season of the Negima anime, which also appeared on TV Tokyo.  FUNimation Productions has acquired the rights to the first season of Negima, and the first U.S. Negima DVD is due out on June 13th.  According to Anime News Network, the entire second episode of the original Negima series was redone for the Japanese DVD release and the production team from Xebec's Fafner anime series was brought in to work on the Negima anime series beginning with episode #10 -- given the problems and do-overs with season one, it is not altogether surprising that TV Tokyo went with a different animation studio for the second season.
