In an interview on the majorspoilers Website Hellboy Animated producer Tad Stones, who heads the animation unit at Starz Media, talked about a new project, announcing: 'I'm starting production of Turok, Son of Stone based on the early Gold Key comics.'

Stones has brought in a number of former Warner Bros. animators to work on the project, which will be a direct-to-DVD release, meaning that it will be, in Stones' words, 'easily as bloody as the video games.'

One of the major pop culture innovations of the past few years is direct-to-DVD animated features based on comic book characters and targeted at older viewers, which means they can be a whole lot more violent than cartoons destined for Saturday morning viewing.

Originally published by Dell starting in 1954, Turok was the longest-lived original Dell comic.  Matt Murphy, an editor at Dell, 'probably' created the stone-age character who hunted dinosaurs in a remote hidden valley.  Turok made the transition to Gold Key (with issue #30 in 1962) and lasted until 1982.  A little more than a decade later Jim Shooter revived the character (as Turok, Dinosaur Hunter) for Valiant Comics in 1993.  Turok managed to make the jump from Valiant to Acclaim Comics, but his most influential stint during the 1990s was as the lead character in a hugely popular video game from Acclaim.
