In a surprise announcement at the San Diego Comic-Con Boom! Studios named veteran comic book writer and editor Mark Waid Editor-in-Chief effective August 1st.  Waid, who is well-known for the classic Kingdom Come and his writing stints on The Flash, and Captain America, to say nothing of his Jemas-rousting run on Fantastic Four, will continue to write mainstream superhero books such as The Brave and the Bold and a revamped Flash for DC, but Boom! will be the home for his creator-owned projects.

Waid does have considerable experience as an editor, functioning in that position on Grant Morrison's superb run on Doom Patrol as well as helping to guide (with other key writers including Morrison, Greg Rucka, Geoff Johns, and Keith Giffen) DC's recent mega-events including Infinite Crisis and 52.

Under the leadership of co-founders Andrew Cosby (creator of the Sci Fi Channel's Eureka) and Ross Ritchie, Boom! Studios is making an impressive move in the comic market with projects such as the recently announced comic book series based on The Godfather (see 'A Comic Book Offer You Can't Refuse') and two new series featuring hot writers from other media (see 'Boom Studios Brings Movie, TV Scribes to SDCC').
