Paramount studios, which just announced that Jon Chu would be directing the G.I. Joe sequel last week (see “Jon Chu to Direct G.I. Joe Sequel”), has now set a date for the as-yet-untitled film’s debut, August 10th, 2012. Casting announcements should be coming soon, and it appears safe to say that there will be major changes as many members of the cast of the original film including Sienna Miller (The Baroness) are unlikely to return.

As previously reported by ICv2, Paramount desperately wanted the new G.I. Joe film to function as a summer tentpole in 2012. Since Paramount sold distribution rights to The Avengers back to Disney, the studio only has one major action film slated for the summer of 2012, the Star Trek sequel. Now with G.I. Joe, Paramount should have two action tentpoles.

Paramount also announced that Martin Scorsese’s 3D film of the Caldecott Award Winning The Invention of Hugo Cabret will debut later this year on November 23rd, 2011.
